Alexander's bar is located on the end of the main highstreet in Mossgate. It was originally a large department store from the Victorian era that was passed down to him by his aunt. The Hive first opened in 2001 as Dandelion Fluff, with an eclectic array of left over furniture from the old department store and anything else he could get relatively cheaply. The basement is a club open on Friday and Saturday evenings and for special events, the ground floor is a cafe by day and a bar by night, and on the top floor along with the staff only areas there is a rentable space for social groups and meetings that holds events such as an LGBT book club (priority is given to the LGBT community, but it is open to anyone who wants it). It grew in popularity as the LGBT population of Mossgate grew, and in 2011, to celebrate their tenth anniversary, it was closed for extensive refurbishments, reopening as the Hive, with a new ultra modern black and gold bee theme.
The food is good, the drinks are better, and the staff are gorgeously attractive (and suited to all tastes) and fashionably dressed. The Hive heavily supports LGBT events in the community such as Pride, and there are always special events around holidays for those for whom the community is their family. On Christmas, for example, there is a free invite only event (although to obtain an invite all you need to do is ask) where the cafe and bar are open for attendees. The attendees serve, cook and clean up after the meals, according to their strength and weeknesses, the same way as they would at home, and generally people are encouraged to treat the cafe and other attendees as the home and family they would wish for.
